6 Homemaking Anchors to Make Your Days Awesome!

Lately, I’ve begun the practice of homemaking anchors. I was inspired to start placing these anchors in my life after reading Sally Clarkson’s book, “The Life-Giving Home.” I already was in the process of creating anchors for my family like homemade cinnamon rolls for every birthday and morning devotions with my little guys, but I wondered if I could make my days even better by giving myself some homemaking anchors. Little things that I did every day while creating a home for my family, bits of intentional to give life that much more purpose. I ultimately wanted these anchors to create joy in my life. Here’s what I’ve been doing:

Diffusing Oils or a Scentsy pod

I’m seriously awaiting the day when this can turn into a candle (Mama of two climbing toddlers here!), but the scent of a good oil blend or Scentsy pod is so comforting and uplifting. I think it really is the ribbon on a freshly cleaned home. I like to diffuse or melt in the morning to get my mind in gear.

Feeling Defeated? Podcast Time!

The last few months, I’ve become obsessed with podcasts! I’ll put together a more comprehensive list of my favorites soon, but Sally Clarkson’s podcast, “At Home with Sally and Friends”  and Kat Lee’s “Inspired to Action” podcast have been my two absolute must-haves. Whenever I feel like my job doesn’t matter or that I just can’t even, I’ll listen to one of these. They are so encouraging and help shift my perspective.

Daily Rest Time

I’m still getting my little ones on board with this one, but I started taking an hour out of each day to brew a cup of coffee and read, listen to music or watch an episode of a favorite TV show. Taking one hour out of the day to simply rest makes such a difference! It gives me energy, calms my toddlers and reminds me to take it slow and savor this season of life.

A Set Routine or Rhythm

As much as I’d love to be that spontaneous Mama, I find that I do better with a routine. My children also do better with a routine and it brings a sense of security to our days. You can see more on my routines here and here.

Rough Day? Pamper Night!

At the end of a SUPER bad day, I’ll take a bubble bath, use lotion and a face mask and just chill. On those nights, I try not to do any computer work or anything that will stress me out. Knowing that I have this treat waiting for me at the end of a bad day makes it so much easier to thrive in that situation.

Worship Music

I will usually play worship music in the background unless I’m listening to a podcast. Even when my kids are watching TV, I’ll have it playing! It fills my home with the constant presence of Christ. It calms my heart and it is the ultimate anchor!
