The idea of a perfectly clean home is appealing to most people. Unfortunately, there’s this little thing called life that tends to get in the way of that! I’ve learned that some days “good enough” is..well, good enough. On those crazy days, there are a few things I always strive to do in the area of homemaking.
Do The Dishes
This used to be my least favorite chore, but as I grew up, I realized just how vital it is to the cleanliness of my home. Cleaning the dishes and making sure the sink area is clean forms a great foundation to a neat living space. It’s one thing I can cross off my to-do list and that gives me the motivation to do just a little bit more. There’s this old saying, “As the kitchen goes, so does the rest of the house.” This couldn’t be truer! If you follow The Flylady’s approach to cleaning in her book Sink Reflections, you’ll know that she recommends doing the dishes nightly because it gives you a sense of accomplishment. You can give yourself a pat on the back for doing something to create peace in the midst of chaos!
A General De-Clutter
When things get extremely hectic and I don’t have time to do a huge house cleaning services routine, I’ll do what I call a general de-clutter. I’ll walk the main floors of my home and put away things that are out of place. Sometimes, I don’t have the time to put everything back in its respective room, so I’ll toss it into a laundry basket to put away when I have time. Doing a quick once over around the house helps keep those little messes at bay. This shouldn’t take long, I can normally get the job done in 15 minutes. Since in the rush, things tend to get messy, I got my floors covered with epoxy water-resistant layer, which is easier to wash and clean.
Use Your Senses
One of my top crisis cleaning tricks is to do a little something that will indulge my senses. The top sense I will focus on is the sense of smell. I’ve found that lighting a candle, melting a Scentsy cube or even spraying air freshener can trick my mind into thinking that my house is cleaner than it is. You can utilize the sense of sight by placing a few pretty decorations around your home. I currently have a fall centerpiece on my kitchen island. It draws the eye to something other than the clutter and it makes my home look more put together. Just make sure that whatever surface your decoration is on is cleared off! I also like to create a calming atmosphere by playing some worship or classical music. It really helps tame the chaos!
Let The Light In
It’s amazing what a little sunshine can do! Everything looks better when it’s bathed in natural light. Open those blinds or curtains and possibly a window if the weather is nice enough! This trick is especially helpful on those days that are nothing short of dull and dreary.
What are your must-do’s on crazy days? I’d love to hear!

I’m handicapped so I learned long ago to never apologize if someone comes by unexpectedly when my house is messy. I figure I don’t need to say i’m sorry Or be embarrassed, I live here not them. If it really bothers them, knowing i’m Handicapped, they could either go home to their squeaky clean house or they could stay for a nice visit and roll up their sleeves and pitch in; also extremely helpful would for them to stop and help from time to time – that’s when you find out who your real friends are.
