How to Create a Natural Cleaning Kit for Under $20!

February 11, 2017 by Cate H

This post might include affiliate links for products that I know and LOVE!

There are so many benefits to using natural cleaning products over chemically based ones. Here are a few of my favorite benefits:

  • Kid-safe
  • Cleaner air
  • Fewer skin irritations
  • Potentially cheaper

Natural cleaning products can cost a little bit more if you buy them from the store. For some items, like dish soap, I find this is worth it. For other items, like an all-purpose spray or scrub, it’s just as easy to whip up my own. There’s a common misconception that natural cleaning products are full of expensive ingredients. Not true at all! 🙂 Here are a few things you can find in my natural cleaning kit along with a few of my favorite natural cleaning recipes.

Baking Soda

This is a wonderful ingredient that I use to help clean stubborn surfaces. Its fine texture makes it a great natural exfoliant when it’s mixed with a little bit of water. A box of baking soda can be used to absorb weird smells in a fridge and it can be sprinkled on carpets with some cinnamon or on a bed-wetters bed to help deodorize. Baking soda is so versatile and it’s extremely cheap at under $2 a box.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is a great agent to clean windows and mirrors. It really leaves them streak-free! It prevents build-up on faucets and shower heads and it makes a great all-purpose cleaner when mixed with something to make it smell better. 🙂 Paired with baking soda, it makes a great natural drain cleaner and it can even clean your coffee pot. I find that it really helps degrease dirty dishes and it softens clothes just like a regular fabric softener. I find vinegar for about $3.

Essential Oils

These aren’t exactly necessary, but I think the benefits are amazing! Essential oils make your homemade cleaners smell good and they’re a great natural air freshener when diffused. They help your mood and can even have healing qualities. Many oils are antiseptic, making them perfect additions to your cleaning closet. Below, you’ll find a few of my favorites. I am not brand loyal, but I do promote only the oils that I have personally used and love! Start with just one oil that’s $10 or less. A little goes a long way!

Hydrogen Peroxide

Peroxide is my favorite disinfectant because its so fun to watch! It bubbles up and entertains both Mama and tots alike. 🙂 I just put mine in a glass spray bottle mixed with equal parts water. It’s also a stain remover that will remove a lot of stubborn stains like crayons and blood. Note: Test it on a small patch of fabric as this agent can easily alter the color of clothing. Peroxide is affordable at Wal-Mart at about $2.50.

All of these ingredients can be purchased for under $20, making this a great cleaning kit to have! Hint: To save money on rags, use old towels or t-shirts cut into smaller sizes. Place your items in a cute caddy and some spray bottles from Dollar Tree and you’re set! An amazing cleaning kit for under $20!
