4 Ways to Reignite Your Passion for the Bible

I’m going to be honest for a moment.

Bible reading and I have a complex relationship. I love God’s word, I truly do. I love learning new things, feeling the Holy Spirit breathe into my life and teaching it to my children. However, when my life gets crazy, it can be completely hard to be excited about my Bible. Suddenly, those inspiring words run together and my mind can’t focus. Simply put, I lose any sense of passion.

Spending time in the Bible is important. It keeps us strong in our faith, helps us know what to do and it gives us a close glimpse of God’s heart for us. When we lose our passion for God’s word, life tends to get a little crazy and not in a good way.

Here are a few ways to reignite your passion for the Bible:

 

Ask

The great thing about God is that He’s literally seen it all. He’s had access to the inner workings of so many hearts that I don’t believe anything we say can shock Him. So, while it might feel a little disrespectful at first, it is completely okay to ask God to reignite your passion for His Word. It’s okay to go to Him and say, “I don’t feel like reading this today. It is confusing me and quite honestly, watching Fixer Upper would be more up my alley at the moment.” When we’re completely honest with God and truly want to love His word again, a funny thing happens. He gives us that passion. He shows us ways to fall in love with the Bible.

Mix it Up

Sometimes, you need a fresh perspective. I think we get caught up in the same old, same old too easily. Routines are easy to fall into and have their place, but sometimes the root of a routine is the thought that God can only speak to us in a certain way. If we take a look at the Bible, God spoke to His people through other people, a burning bush and even a donkey. Obviously, He has a heart for creativity. So, I really think He’s a fan of mixing things up.

Instead of reading the Word in the morning, try reading before bed. Instead of reading the Bible, try listening to it and see if that helps things come to life. Listen to a sermon for your quiet time or try out a new Bible study. Go outside. Go inside. Use highlighters. Use a new version of the Bible. Dig deeper by using a concordance. The possibilities are endless.

Remember

Remember. Remember the works of the Lord. Remember your true identity as His child. Remember that He longs to have a close relationship with you, to teach you, to comfort you, to instruct you in the path you should take. Remember how true Joy comes from His presence and Peace that passes all understanding.

The benefits of reading the Bible are endless. Sometimes, it helps to keep those in mind to motivate you.

Think Legacy

I can’t tell you how many wonderful stories I’ve heard about men and women who truly loved their Bibles. Their loved ones remember them, heads bowed, drinking in the Scriptures. I’ve heard tales of grandmothers who had a Scripture for every situation, of Bibles well-marked with notes and tears, and of Mothers who never stopped believing the words they read.

I want to leave that type of legacy for my family to remember me by. In my mind, there are few legacies more beautiful than that of a godly wife and Mama. This is motivation enough to press through and get excited about daily devotions.
