Homeschooling is one of the greatest privileges a Mom can have. We get to shepherd our children’s hearts, minds, and souls day by day. But I won’t sugarcoat it, homeschooling can also be one of the hardest things we’ll ever do. And, you’ll need encouragement, which is why I’m sharing 10 Inspiring Books for Homeschool Moms. Because trust me, there are days filled with joy and discovery, and then there are days where the math lessons bring tears (maybe yours, maybe theirs!).

On those hard days, one of the best ways I’ve found to refuel is through good books. Books that remind me why I chose this journey, books that give me practical ideas to make our days flow better, books that remind me that I’m equipped, and books that remind me that I don’t have to do this alone.

Whether you’re brand new to homeschooling or you’ve been at it for years, investing in your own heart and mind as a homeschool mom is essential.

How to Invest in Yourself as a Homeschool Teacher

When Moms think about investing in homeschooling, we usually picture buying curriculum, art supplies, or stocking the bookshelves with classic page-turners. But the truth is, one of the greatest investments you can make is in yourself.

As homeschool moms, we’re not just teachers, but leaders, guides, homemakers, and nurturers. Our children learn so much from who we are just as much as from what we teach. They’re watching our every move…for better or worse. That means it’s vital to fill our own cups so we have something life-giving to pour out.

And, the best part is that filling your own cup doesn’t have to involve fancy spa days or Mom vacays. You can glean just as much refreshment from sitting down with a hot beverage and a book.

Books for homeschool moms have a way of speaking truth to weary hearts and giving us new vision when we’re stuck in the daily grind. They can shift our perspective, remind us of the bigger picture, and refresh our joy. Taking time to read, even if it’s just a few pages before bed, is not selfish; it’s sowing seeds into your calling as a Mom. And, you don’t have to hit up your local Barnes and Noble either. You can find many of these books at your local library or ThriftBooks.

My 10 Favorite Books for Homeschool Moms

Here are the ten homeschool-centric books I return to again and again. Some are deeply practical, others are beautifully inspirational, but all of them have left a lasting mark on my homeschooling journey. Whether you’re new to homeschooling or a seasoned pro, there’s always something to learn. 🙂

1. The Call of the Wild and Free by Ainsley Arment

If you’re feeling boxed in by traditional ideas of what education should look like, this book will set you free. Ainsley Arment paints a beautiful picture of a lifestyle of learning that’s rooted in curiosity, nature, and connection. She reminds us that education doesn’t have to look like rows of desks and rigid schedules, but it can be full of wonder and wild adventures.

This book gave me permission to let go of unrealistic expectations and embrace a more life-giving rhythm in our homeschool. It’s perfect if you’re craving inspiration and want to recapture joy.

2. Homegrown by Amber O’Neal Johnston

Amber writes with such warmth and conviction about weaving culture, heritage, and community into homeschooling. This book is a compilation of essays by fellow homeschoolers, many from the Wild and Free community.

I’m not going to lie; I may have skipped ahead to Elsie Iudicello’s portion of the book. Reading Homegrown reminded me that homeschooling isn’t just about academics, it’s about shaping whole people. It gave me practical ideas and vision for the long haul.

3. Mother Culture by Karen Andreola

Karen Andreola revives the old Charlotte Mason concept of “mother culture,” which is simply the idea that moms need to keep learning, growing, and creating, too.

I love how Mother Culture encourages us not to lose ourselves in the busyness of teaching. Reading, creating, and nurturing our own souls not only blesses us but also enriches our homes. This book always nudges me to pick up a hobby or read something nourishing just for me. And, with the cozy autumn and winter months just around the bend, the timing is just right.

4. The Life-Giving Home by Sally Clarkson

Sally Clarkson’s words feel like a warm hug. In this book, she and her daughter Sarah share practical ways to make your home a haven of beauty, comfort, and discipleship all year long. I love hearing how Sarah viewed her childhood home and what made the most difference to her. I read this book every single year, which is appropriate as it’s broken up by month!

This one has deeply impacted how I see homemaking as part of homeschooling. Our environment shapes learning more than we realize. Sally helped me see that a cozy, Christ-centered home can be one of the best curricula we could ever give our children.

5. Teaching from Rest by Sarah Mackenzie

If I could only recommend one book to every homeschool mom, this might be it. It’s short, sweet, and gets to the point! Sarah Mackenzie captures the heart of homeschooling with grace and truth. She reminds us that our worth is not in perfectly executed lesson plans but in faithfully pointing our children to Christ.
I love Sarah’s Read-Aloud-Revival membership (particularly Christmas School!) and adore everything she produces.

This book helped me release the constant striving and instead find peace in a slower, more intentional way of teaching. Teaching From Rest feels like a deep breath of fresh air when you’re burned out.

6. Homeschooling by Ginny Yurich

Ginny Yurich, the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, brings such a practical and joy-filled perspective to homeschooling. If you’ve ever heard her podcast, you know just how infectious her personality is! Her book is all about reclaiming time, savoring the outdoors, and keeping learning hands-on and relational.

This one lit a fire under me to make sure we weren’t stuck inside at the kitchen table all day. Homeschooling has the unique gift of flexibility, and Ginny reminds us to embrace it just because we can.

7. Homeschool Bravely by Jamie Erickson

Doubt is a common companion on the homeschool journey. Am I doing enough? Am I qualified? Am I ruining my kids? Jamie Erickson tackles all those fears head-on in Homeschool Bravely.

This book reminded me that I don’t have to be the perfect teacher; I just have to be a faithful one. God equips us for the work He calls us to, and Jamie’s words are like a loving friend cheering you on when you want to quit.

8. Modern Miss Mason by Leah Boden

If you’ve ever wanted to bring Charlotte Mason’s philosophy into the 21st century, this is the book to read. I adore Leah Boden because she’s classy, intelligent, and so knowledgeable. She explains Mason’s principles in a way that feels both timeless and doable for today’s busy families.

I loved how this book gave me tangible ways to weave beauty, literature, nature study, and narration into our daily lives without feeling overwhelmed. It’s inspiring but also practical, which is the best combination.

9. Charlotte Mason’s Original Writings

While modern authors have done a wonderful job interpreting Mason’s philosophy, there’s something powerful about going straight to the source. Her six-volume series can feel intimidating compared to other books for homeschool moms, but even small portions are incredibly rich. While you’ll need a little more brain power to read Charlotte Mason’s Original Writings, it’s totally worth it.

Charlotte Mason’s words remind me that education is “an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.” Her vision was far ahead of her time, and her insights into the child’s heart and mind are still profoundly relevant today.

10. The Joy of Slow by Leslie Martino

This book is a refreshing reminder to stop rushing and savor the little moments. Leslie Martino encourages moms to embrace slowness, connection, and rhythms that give life rather than drain it.

As homeschoolers, it’s easy to get caught up in checking off boxes and racing through curriculum. The Joy of Slow gave me permission to pause, to breathe, and to focus on the relationships that matter most.

Homeschooling isn’t just about giving our kids an education… it’s about giving them a childhood rooted in love, faith, and wonder. But to pour into them well, we need to be poured into too.

These ten books for homeschool moms have been a lifeline for me. They’ve given me courage when I felt weak, wisdom when I was confused, and joy when I was weary. My hope is that they’ll become faithful companions for you, too.

So, homeschool mama, here’s your permission: pick up one of these books, curl up with a cup of tea, and let your heart be refreshed. You are doing holy work, and you don’t have to do it alone.
