Steal Away Home is yet another masterpiece from Billy Coffey. This book will make you think, it has a lot of depth and it stayed with me after I was finished. Coffey combines reality with a dose of fantasy in a way that is intriguing and leaves your head spinning. This book was a great love story and taught valuable lessons about what really matters in life.
Owen is a boy from the “right side of the tracks”. He’s a talented baseball player with the ability to make it to the big leagues. Micky is a girl who lives a rough life in the “Shanty” section of town. When they have a chance meeting on the hills one day, something sparks that last years and weathers many storms. Owen longs to save Micky and to take her away from the life she lives, but when Micky has a religious conversion, she resists leaving and instead stays to save her people. The book shares the story of Owen reminiscing about life as it was and where he went wrong.
This book spoke a lot about social stigma. You notice it in the adults and in the teenagers. It made me think twice about the way I treat people. I have to admit, I was a little bit mad about the mystery at the end of the book. I prefer a bit more finality when a book finishes, but it was a unique ending that I won’t forget. It did earn a place on my ever elusive fiction shelf, because like all of Billy Coffey’s books, I tend to re-read them just to see if I may have missed something..
